Exposing What Dems Voted For: Special Obamacare Subsidy Rules That Ignore Income
Washington, DC,
December 16, 2021
TOPLINE: Whip Scalise is committed to exposing President Biden and Congressional Democrats’ giveaways to radical special interest groups and the far-left provisions buried in their 2,135-page big government tax-and-spending spree that they rushed through the House of Representatives. There are many “hidden gems” that Democrats handed the socialists, and Whip Scalise will continue to highlight them.
Special Obamacare Subsidy Rules That Ignore Income
Section 137305 extends an egregious policy that was included in the Democrats’ first reckless spending bill last spring. The provision allows anyone who claimed unemployment for one week or more in 2021 or 2022 to be eligible for free Obamacare coverage that year, regardless of their actual income.
For other Obamacare enrollees, their income is used to determine how much of a premium and cost-sharing subsidy they are eligible for – the higher the income, the lower the subsidy amount and vice versa.
Under the policy that is extended in the Democrats’ latest tax-and-spending spree, it won’t matter how much money the enrollee makes. So long as this person claimed unemployment for one week that year, they can get premium-free coverage and cost-sharing subsidies for the entire year.
This is an inexplicable policy that allows higher-income individuals to get greater government subsidies than lower-income individuals.
BOTTOM LINE: Democrats' radical reconciliation package circumvents their own rules for Obamacare. This shows how desperate President Biden and Speaker Pelosi are to increase the amount of Americans dependent on the government for their health insurance. This is a reckless waste of taxpayer money.
